Wedding cake guide

How much does a wedding cake cost in Northern Ireland?

A clear, honest guide to wedding cake prices in 2026, what drives the cost and how to get the most from your budget.

Key points

  • UK couples spend around £360 on their wedding cake on average, according to Bridebook, while Irish couples spend around €436 (weddingsonline 2025 survey).
  • The biggest factors are the number of tiers and portions, the finish (buttercream or fondant) and how detailed the decoration is.
  • Buttercream cakes are typically 20 to 30% cheaper than fully iced fondant cakes.
  • A smaller display cake plus a table or cutting cake is one of the easiest ways to feed more guests for less.

What do couples spend on a wedding cake?

Wedding cake prices vary a lot, so it helps to start with what other couples actually spend. Bridebook, the UK wedding planning platform, puts the average UK spend on a wedding cake at around £360, with most couples spending somewhere between £250 and £1,000. In the Republic of Ireland, the weddingsonline 2025 Irish Wedding Survey of over 1,000 couples found an average cake spend of €436.

For context, the average cost of a whole wedding in the UK is now around £20,600 (Bridebook 2026 report), so the cake is usually a small but memorable part of the budget. It is also one of the few things that every guest sees, photographs and tastes.

Typical wedding cake prices by tier

Bridebook publishes price bands for wedding cakes by the number of tiers. They are a useful guide to what you can expect across the UK market in 2026:

CakeAffordableMid-rangeLuxury
1 tier£100 to £200£200 to £300£300 to £500
2 tiers£250 to £350£350 to £500£650 to £750
3 tiers£300 to £450£450 to £650£850 to £1,000
4 tiers£400 to £600£600 to £900£1,000 to £2,000+

Larger and more elaborate designs sit above these bands. Showstopper cakes with many tiers, lighting, staircases or structural work are priced on their design, because they involve far more baking, engineering and set-up time.

What affects the price of a wedding cake?

  • Tiers and portions. More guests means more cake. Our serving guide shows roughly how many portions each tier size gives.
  • The finish. A fully iced (fondant) cake takes longer to finish than buttercream. Irish cake maker price lists show fondant costing roughly 25 to 35% more than the same cake in buttercream, and The Vanilla Valley puts buttercream at around 20 to 30% cheaper.
  • Decoration. Handmade sugar flowers take hours to make. Bridebook puts them at around £5 to £10 per stem, or £30 to £100+ for a bespoke arrangement. Fresh flowers from your florist, pearls, piping or a monogram are other ways to add detail.
  • Design complexity. Separated tiers, lighting, unusual shapes and structural pieces all add time and skill.
  • Flavours. Most flavours cost the same, but some premium fillings or alcohol-infused sponges can add a little.
  • Delivery and set-up. Tiered cakes need to be delivered carefully and assembled at the venue, so distance and set-up time are part of the price.

How to make your cake budget go further

  • Choose buttercream. It is usually cheaper than fondant and many guests prefer the taste.
  • Add a table or cutting cake. A smaller display cake for photos, plus a simple cake served from the kitchen, feeds a crowd for less. Read our guide to cutting cakes and table cakes.
  • Serve finger portions. At most Irish weddings cake is served in the evening with tea and coffee, so smaller finger portions are the norm. Our traditions guide explains more.
  • Use fresh or silk flowers. Your florist can often supply a few extra stems to match your bouquet.
  • Be clear about numbers. Order for the guests who will actually be eating cake, not your full invitation list.
